Former Winnipeg mayor named new NRTEE head
OTTAWA, ONT-Prime Minister Paul Martin has appointed former Winnipeg mayor Glen Murray as chair of the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy (NRTEE). Murray is currently research associate for the Centre for Urban and Community Studies, visiting scholar and urban policy co-ordinator at the University of Toronto, and a business partner in the consulting firm The Glen Murray Group. "As a former mayor of Winnipeg, Glen Murray is one of the pioneers of the green municipal infrastructure initiative," Martin noted. As mayor of Winnipeg, Murray was known for his vision of building culturally dynamic urban centres; he was also the first chair of the Big City Mayors Caucus. The NRTEE is an independent advisory body providing decision makers, opinion leaders and the Canadian public advice and recommendations on promoting sustainable development. Its members represent all sectors of Canadian society. With the recent coming into force of the Kyoto Protocol the federal government has requested the NRTEE's advice and recommendations in the development of a long-term energy and climate change strategy for Canada.
