North Bay to use Green Municipal Funds to encourage investment in local wind farm
NORTH BAY, ONT-A $50,000 Green Municipal Funds grant will help the city of North Bay develop a business case for private investment in a wind farm which would transmit energy to the municipal grid operated by city-owned North Bay Hydro. The grant was provided by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), which administers the funds on behalf of the federal government. North Bay Mayor Victor Fedeli said the city has developed a relationship with West Wind Development for the first half of the project. West Wind Development recently installed a 50-metre-high tower on city-owned property in location capable of capturing the "lake effect" of Lake Nipissing. Instruments supported by the tower will collect data on a continuous basis for a 12-month period to evaluate the local wind power potential. The Green Municipal Funds, initially endowed with $250 million, support partnerships and leveraging of both public and private sector funding to reach higher standards of air, water and soil quality, and climate protection. In the 2005 budget, the federal government committed a further $300 million to the Funds.
