Disposal firm pleads guilty to violating air, water quality laws

EDMUNDSTON,NB-An Edmundston area construction and demolition debris disposal company pleaded guilty to two violations of provincial environmental laws. Gallant Enterprises was fined a total of $2,400 ($1,200 on each charge). An Environment and Local Government Department inspector conducting a routine compliance audit of the company's disposal facility last September found that materials not approved for disposal under the firm's water quality regulation approval had been dumped and disposed of at the site. The inspector also observed a large unsupervised fire at the facility, which appeared to be burning industrial waste. The company's air quality approval prohibits the burning of any material at the facility. Gallant Enterprises was charged with with failing to comply with a term or condition of an approval issued under the Clean Environment Act water quality regulation and failing to comply with a term or condition of an approval issued under the Clean Air Act air quality regulation.
