Ontario exempts hybrid vehicles from Drive Clean testing

TORONTO, ONT-Through an amendment to the Highway Traffic Act, Ontario is exempting hybrid vehicles-those powered by combinations of internal combustion engines and electric motors-from emissions testing under the provincial Drive Clean program, effective May 1, 2005. The emissions testing equipment used in Ontario is not compatible with hybrid vehicles as it requires the vehicles to idle, something hybrids are not designed to do. Owners of hybrid vehicles already tested will be contacted by the Drive Clean office and their test fees refunded.
