Landfill operator fined $12K for violating C of A requirements

THUNDER BAY, ONT-336101 Ontario Limited, operator of a landfill in Thunder Bay, recently pleaded guilty to three charges under Ontario's Environmental Protection Act was fined a total of $12,000, plus victim fine surcharge. In April 2003, a Ministry of Environment (MOE) inspection found the company to be in non-compliance with several requirements of its provisional certificate of approval (C of A). The company was subsequently charged with three counts of failing to comply with C of A requirements under section 186(3) of the act. Specific charges included: failing to deposit waste in a series of cells 50 metres wide by 200 metres long; failing to install the required boundary markers for the working area; and depositing waste outside the 35-hectare "footprint" of the landfill site.
