Developer ordered to remove soil from waterfowl nesting area
GRANDE PRAIRIE, ALTA-An environmental enforcement order issued to residential developer Crystal Landing required the company to remove soil which it deposited in a wetland on its property near Grande Prairie. The soil was to be removed by May 7 and a plan to return the site to the original condition must be submitted to Alberta Environment by May 24. The soil deposit directly affects a nesting area for pintail ducks, and with nesting season approaching, it is important that the soil be removed and the area returned to a condition useable for waterfowl. Alberta Environment issued the order after receiving a public complaint. Under the provincial Water Act, an approval must be obtained from Alberta Environment before any activity is carried out involving, or adjacent to, a body of water. Crystal Landing did not seek approval before depositing the soil.
