Acheson East Oil & Gas ordered to prepare, submit site cleanup documents

EDMONTON, ALTA-Acheson East Oil and Gas was issued an environmental protection order last week, under Alberta's Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, due to its failure to clean up levels of hydrocarbon and salt on an abandoned well and battery site located in Parkland County, just west of Edmonton. The order requires the company to: identify and delineate all substances associated with the site that may cause an adverse effect by June 30, 2005; submit to Alberta Environment, by July 29, 2005, a detailed description of the work that will be done on the site; and provide a schedule for the work to be finished by August 31, 2005. The company has confirmed elevated levels of hydrocarbons and salts on the site. In February 2004, Alberta Environment asked the company to provide a remediation plan and schedule by March 15, 2004. In March 2005, a second letter was sent requesting the same information by April 4, 2005. Alberta Environment reported that these documents have still not been received and that the company has made no effort to clean up the site.
