American Water Services fined $20K in connection with illegal sludge spreading
STRATFORD, ONT- june 14- American Water Services recently pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to comply with a condition of its provisional certificate of approval (C of A), contrary to the Environmental Protection Act (EP Act). The firm was fined $20,000 plus victim fine surcharge. Having been contracted by the municipality of Perth to operate its sewage treatment plant, American Water Services received a C of A in September 2002, allowing it to dispose of processed organic waste, or sewage sludge, onto a farm field within a specified time period, from March 1 to November 30. A Ministry of Environment (MOE) inspection and investigation confirmed, however, that processed waste was being spread on the field one day after the allowed period. As a result, the corporation was charged under section 27(1) of the EP Act.
