Nova Scotia introduces new biosolids guidelines

HALIFAX, NS-The Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Labour is finalizing new guidelines for land application of sewage treatment biosolids. The new rules will allow only treated sludges meeting specific biological and chemical criteria to to be spread on land. No untreated septage or sewage sludges will be accepted for land application. Once finalized and approved by the government, the new guidelines will be incorporated into any approval issued for land application. Meanwhile, a moratorium imposed in January on all approvals for land application of biosolids has been extended until May 15, pending finalization.
