Improper waste storage costs Detox $8K
WHITBY, ONT-Detox Environmental was fined $8,000 and levied a victim fine surcharge after pleading guilty to a charge of of improperly storing waste. The company holds a provisional certificate of approval (C of A) to operate a waste disposal site in the municipality of Clarington, east of Toronto in the Region of Durham. In August 2001, an inspection of the site by the Ministry of Environment's SWAT team found that the company was storing waste contrary to the conditions set out under its C of A. By failing to store all wastes indoors at all times, Detox Environmental violated condition 17 of its permit, a breach of Section 186(3) of the Environmental Protection Act. The company pleaded guilty and was given 60 days to pay the $8,000 fine.
