Saint John fined $7,500 after chlorine pump fails at water plant
SAINT JOHN, NB-The city of Saint John was been fined $7,500 in connection with a chlorine pump failure at its drinking water distribution facilities. The incident, which occurred on April 16, 2004, resulted in untreated water entering the distribution system. New Brunswick's Department of Environment and Local Government charged the city with failing to comply with the operating approval for its drinking water distribution facilities, issued under the Clean Environment Act water quality regulation. The city pleaded guilty to the charge. The operaing approval requires the city to notify the Department of Health and Wellness immediately when there is a stoppage or malfunction of a continuous disinfection system.
