Toronto names new Medical Officer of Health
TORONTO, ONT-Dr David McKeown was recently appointed Toronto's new Medical Officer of Health, effective September 7, 2004. He replaces Dr Sheela Basrur, who was appointed provincial Medical Officer of Health in January. Dr. Barbara Yaffe, who has been the city's acting Medical Officer of Health since then, will continue in that role until Dr McKeown assumes his new post. Dr McKeown, a specialist in community medicine, has extensive experience in the public health field, having served as Medical Officer of Health for the Borough of East York immediately prior to Toronto's amalgamation, and most recently in the Region of Peel. He received his medical and public health training at McGill University and the University of Toronto. He holds a Masters degree in community health and epidemiology and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
