Steel merchant pleads guilty to spill charges, fined $7K

PEMBROKE, ONT-Pemco Steel Sales, operating as Steel Solutions, was fined a total of $7,000 in connection with an unreported paint spill. The company, a wholesale/retail steel merchant, also manufactures steel trailers. In July 2002, Ministry of Environment (MOE) staff inspected the area surrounding the company's property in Pembroke and discovered evidence of a paint spill from the site. The company did not report the spill, which caused vegetation damage. Pemco was charged under the under the Environmental Protection Act with causing or permitting the discharge of a contaminant, namely waste paint, into the environment that caused or was likely to cause an adverse effect, and failing to report the spill, contrary to Sections 14(1) and 92(1) of the act, respectively. The company pleaded guilty to the two charges and was fined $3,500 for each offence.
