Irving charged over untreated effluent release

SAINT JOHN, NB-Irving Pulp & Paper was recently charged with violating Subsection 36(3) of the federal Fisheries Act in connection with a release of untreated paper mill effluent in December 2002. Environment Canada alleged that the company released untreated paper mill effluent into Little River in Saint John during a routine test of a back-up generator. The Fisheries Act prohibits the deposit of a deleterious substance into water frequented by fish. The charge followed an investigation by Environment Canada's Atlantic region enforcement office. More information is available from Dave Aggett in Environment Canada's Atlantic region office, 902/483-5618.
