Three-year ban on pesticide use imposed for improper application

VEGREVILLE, ALTA-A provincial court has ordered 964405 Alberta Ltd, operating as Alberta Airborne Solutions, not to use pesticides for three years after finding the company guilty of improper application of a pesticide under Alberta's Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act. The court also levied a fine of $1,000. Charges were laid after an aerial application of pesticide damaged approximately 50 acres of neighbouring treed pastureland. Fifteen acres of these trees were killed along with damage to the trees on the property north of the application site. Samples taken of the dead trees showed the presence of the chemical triclopyr. Misapplication of pesticides and herbicides can result in damage to off-target vegetation ranging from yellowing of leaves, abnormal growth, or death of portions of the plant.
