Senior Alcan v-p to head IISD board for three-year term
MONTREAL, QUE-Daniel Gagnier, senior vice-president, corporate and external affairs for Alcan, has been appointed chairman of the board of the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), in Winnipeg. Gagnier, who recently assumed Alcan's global leadership role for sustainability initiatives, will chair the IISD for three years. His mandate, in concert with his 20 fellow board members, is to engage decision-makers in government, business, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other sectors to develop and implement policies that are simultaneously beneficial to the global economy, the global environment and to social well-being. Gagnier also heads the International Organization for Standardization's technical committee on Environmental Management (ISO/TC 207) and is former chair of the Strategic Advisory Group on Social Responsibility for ISO. In 2004, he was named chairman of the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters' board of directors. Founded in 1990, IISD is a not-for-profit policy and research institute dedicated to promoting change towards sustainable development through its research and effective communication of its findings. IISD contributes to sustainable development by advancing policy recommendations on international trade and investment, economic policy, climate change, measurement and assessment, and natural resources management.
