Waste Management Trust Fund provides $200K to clean up Harbour Grace incinerator site

ST JOHN'S, NFLD-A grant of $200,000 has been approved under the Newfoundland and Labrador Waste Management Trust Fund to clean up the former Harbour Grace incinerator site. Provincial Environment and Conservation Minister Tom Osborne said the funding, secured through the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board, will ensure a proper environmental cleanup at the site. The town of Harbour Grace will use the funding to remove a number of structures at the site and clean up the grounds, incluiding removal of all large metal debris. The site will then be regraded to enhance the natural drainage in the area and allow it to blend in with the surrounding topography. The incinerator operated as a regional waste disposal facility for the Conception Bay North area until November 2002 when it was closed due to serious environmental, operational and public health concerns. Since then, all municipal solid waste collected in the region has been trucked to the Robin Hood Bay landfill in St John's.
