3M containment system to be built at Turner Valley gas plant cleanup site

EDMONTON, ALTA-The Alberta government has announced plans to build a $3-million containment system at the Turner Valley gas plant cleanup site. This will be the last remaining step in preventing hydrocarbon contamination from migrating off the site. The provincial department of Community Development has been the lead agency for the cleanup and reclamation of the site, working with Alberta Environment and Alberta Infrastructure and Transportation over the past six years. To date, there has been no sign of contamination from the site entering the nearby Sheep River. The investment in the containment system brings the total government funding for reclamation of the Turner Valley site to $5.4 million. The former industrial property was designated a national historic site in 1995. Previous cleanup initiatives have focused on asbestos, mercury, sulfur and neutralizing or removal of underground storage tanks.
