Waste handling firm pleads guilty to illegal hazwaste import
SOREL, QUEBEC-Chem-Tech Environnement, based in the regional municipality of Lajemmerais, pleaded guilty last week to charges of importing hazardous wastes without a permit, in violation of section 185 (1)(b)(i) of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA 1999). Following an investigation by the environmental protection enforcement division of Environment Canada's Quebec region office, the department charged the company with importing liquid toxic pesticides between April and June 2001 without the required permit. The provincial court in Sorel ordered the company to pay a fine of $3,500, plus fees. CEPA 1999 prohibits the import of hazardous wastes for purposes of recycling or destruction without first obtaining a Canadian permit.
