NB Power issues RFP for wind energy project development
FREDERICTON, NB-New Brunswick Power has issued a request for proposals (RFP) for the development, ownership and operation of up to 20 megawatts of wind-powered generation in New Brunswick. Submissions are due in April 2004 and are to propose a commissioning date of no later than March 2006. The initiative is the first step in a long-term plan by which NB Power aims to acquire 100 megawatts from renewable energy projects by 2010. In accordance with both the new provincial Electricity Act and the restructuring of NB Power, the utility is seeking private sector involvement in developing the new wind facilities. These new participants will sell the output from the project to NB Power. In addition to helping NB Power meet growing electricity demand and counter forecast shortages, wind and other renewable energy projects will also help meet emission stabilization and reduction targets. The utility has been working with local interests to promote wind energy development in the province. Wind generation assessments have been carried out at a number of locations and information seminars have been held to enhance public understanding of alternative energy development.
