NEWS SUMMARY: Alberta begins negotiations to secure operator for Swan Hills Centre
EDMONTON, ALTA-The Alberta government is entering into negotiations with Earth Tech (Canada) to operate the Swan Hills Treatment Centre on a long-term basis. Based in Calgary, Earth Tech is a global engineering firm and has a substantial presence in Alberta with over 300 employees. The firm provides a variety of services to meet environmental and infrastructure needs for industry and government. It is, for example, currently managing Edmonton's municipal composting facility. Alberta Infrastructure issued a request for proposals in April to find a long-term operator for the Swan Hills facility. After reviewing all submissions, the department selected Earth Tech, based on criteria which included financial benefit to Alberta, related corporate experience, compliance with all regulatory requirements, ability to accept all types of Alberta waste and the safe operation and security of the facility. The firm also presented a solid operational plan and strong technical resources. The new operator is expected to be in place by April 2003. The Swan Hills Treatment Centre is the only facility of its kind in Canada and has treated more than 200,000 tonnes of hazardous waste.
